Jaipur: The Rajasthan government, led by Chief Minister Bhajan Lal, has lifted the long-standing ban on the export of camels—the state animal of Rajasthan—to other states. The decision comes in response to the declining camel population and aims to support camel herders while boosting trade at the upcoming International Pushkar Cattle Fair.
An official notification from the Animal Husbandry Department allows the transport of camels outside Rajasthan under specific conditions, including mandatory prior permission, a health check, temporary breeding approval, and timely return of the animals.
Nearly 11 years ago, the Vasundhara Raje government had passed the Rajasthan Camel (Prohibition of Slaughter and Regulation of Temporary Breeding or Migration) Act, 2015, which declared camels the state animal and prohibited their slaughter, sale, and purchase outside the state. While the Act sought to conserve camel populations, it also led to a sharp decline in their trade.
