Kalyan: The political equations in Kalyan–Dombivli have taken a dramatic turn after the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) decided to extend support to the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, reshaping the balance of power in the municipal corporation. The move has weakened the position of Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT), especially significant as both Thackeray cousins had fought the civic elections on the same side.

Soon after the results were declared, MNS leaders in Kalyan–Dombivli announced their backing for the Shinde faction. Party sources said Raj Thackeray had given local units the freedom to act according to the political situation on the ground. The final decision, they said, was taken keeping regional development and administrative stability in mind.

The civic election delivered a tight verdict. The Shinde-led Shiv Sena emerged as the single largest party with 53 seats in the 122-member house, while the BJP followed closely with 50 seats. Shiv Sena (UBT) managed to secure only 11 seats, and the MNS won five. Smaller parties like Congress and NCP (SP) together accounted for three seats.

With MNS extending support, the Shinde faction’s effective strength has crossed the halfway mark, giving the ruling Mahayuti alliance a clear advantage in forming the civic leadership and steering key decisions within the corporation.

Reacting cautiously, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Anil Parab said the decision was entirely MNS’s internal matter and stressed that his party would focus on strengthening its own organisation rather than commenting on others’ choices.

Meanwhile, the state government has started formal steps for mayoral elections across Maharashtra, including Kalyan–Dombivli. The reservation draw for mayor posts is scheduled for January 22 at the Mantralaya. Once the category is announced, nominations will be filed and the mayor will be elected in a special general body meeting.
