Congress leader Rahul Gandhi recently engaged in an hour-long discussion with Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray regarding seat-sharing arrangements in Maharashtra for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. This phone conversation with Thackeray followed an earlier call between Rahul Gandhi and NCP (Nationalist Congress Party-Sharad Chandra Pawar) supremo Sharad Pawar. All three parties are integral members of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance in Maharashtra.

Reports suggest that the MVA partners have come to a consensus on 39 out of the 48 parliamentary seats in Maharashtra. However, disagreements persist over the allocation of the remaining nine seats, including contentious constituencies like Mumbai South Central and Mumbai North West, which are both sought after by both Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress. Furthermore, the demand from Prakash Ambedkar’s Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi for five seats adds to the complexity of finalizing the seat-sharing pact.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena (then undivided) contested together. While the BJP secured 23 out of the 25 seats it contested, the Shiv Sena won 18 seats after contesting in 23 constituencies. Conversely, the Congress, contesting 25 seats, managed to win just one (Chandrapur), while the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (also then undivided) contested 19 seats and emerged victorious in four.

Meanwhile, the Congress and Samajwadi Party (SP) have finalized a seat-sharing agreement in Uttar Pradesh for the Lok Sabha elections. Out of the total 80 seats, the Congress has been allocated 17 seats, with one seat allotted to Chandrashekhar Azad’s party. The SP, on the other hand, will field candidates in the remaining 62 constituencies.

In another development favoring the INDIA bloc, seat-sharing discussions between the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for Delhi’s seven parliamentary seats are nearing completion. According to reports, the AAP is likely to contest four seats, leaving the remaining three for the Congress to contest.
