New Delhi: In a scathing attack on the government, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Thursday condemned the “inhumane” working conditions of railway loco pilots, emphasizing that such conditions not only constitute a grave injustice to the workers but also put the safety of millions of passengers at risk.

Gandhi shared a media report on X which highlighted the refusal of the Indian Railways to grant breaks to its staff and noted that women employees were reportedly forced to work eight-hour shifts without access to toilet facilities. “Last year, when I met railway loco pilots, I was deeply troubled to learn about their conditions—14-hour shifts, continuous night duties, no adequate rest, no food breaks, and no toilet facilities,” Gandhi stated, expressing his concern for their well-being.

He accused the government of neglecting their basic demands, such as fixed working hours and better working conditions, pointing out that a committee was set up by the government merely for show, without any real intent to resolve the issues. Gandhi also criticized the Railway Ministry for often blaming accidents on “human error” without addressing the root causes—namely the extreme and inhumane working conditions that staff are subjected to.

“This is not just an injustice to the employees; it’s a matter of safety for the crores of passengers who depend on trains for daily travel,” he asserted.
