As the Congress party grapples with a series of high-profile departures, Rahul Gandhi, addressing the party’s ‘digital media warriors’ in West Bengal, has openly expressed his stance on leaders whose ideologies diverge from the core principles of the Congress. Specifically, Gandhi singled out Himanta Biswa Sarma and Milind Deora, suggesting that they part ways with the party due to their perceived misalignment with its values.
Sarma, who defected to the BJP in 2014 and now serves as the Chief Minister of Assam, and Deora, who recently joined the Shiv Sena under Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde’s leadership, have been at the center of discussions regarding ideological coherence within the Congress.
During the address, Gandhi reiterated his commitment to defending the foundational principles of the Congress party, emphasizing the importance of ideological integrity. “I want people like Himanta and Milind to leave. I am perfectly ok with it. Himanta represents a particular kind of politics that’s not the politics of the Congress party,” Gandhi stated, underscoring his disapproval of their political affiliations.
Gandhi’s remarks come amidst the ongoing ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ led by him, which entered West Bengal from Assam on January 25 and is slated to reach Jharkhand. His call for ideological alignment resonates with the broader discourse surrounding the party’s identity and direction, particularly in light of recent defections to rival political entities, notably the BJP.
Drawing attention to Sarma’s controversial statements regarding Muslims, Gandhi emphasized the divergence in values and reiterated his reluctance to associate with individuals whose beliefs clash with the party’s principles.
The departure of Milind Deora, a former Union minister and ex-MP from Mumbai South, serves as the latest illustration of leaders exiting the Congress to pursue alternative political avenues, often towards the BJP. This trend of prominent figures defecting from the Congress, including Jyotiraditya Scindia, Jitin Prasada, and Amarinder Singh, underscores the challenges facing the party in maintaining unity and coherence in its ranks.
As the Congress grapples with internal dissent and external challenges, Gandhi’s call for ideological clarity signals a broader introspection within the party, aiming to reaffirm its commitment to its foundational values amidst a shifting political landscape.
