New Delhi: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Monday launched a sharp attack on the central government, alleging that it is deliberately avoiding open discussion on the Union Budget and sensitive international agreements. He claimed that the ruling establishment is uncomfortable with scrutiny and fears a detailed debate inside Parliament.
Speaking to reporters after proceedings in the Lok Sabha, Gandhi said the Opposition was prepared for a structured discussion and had agreed to place its concerns on record before engaging in a broader debate. However, according to him, the government appeared unwilling to allow even this basic parliamentary process to unfold.
Rahul Gandhi alleged that the Prime Minister’s absence from the House was not accidental but a conscious decision to avoid facing uncomfortable questions. He suggested that the Prime Minister chose not to enter the Lok Sabha because the Opposition intended to raise serious issues that could put the government on the defensive.
The Congress leader further claimed that the government is particularly anxious about discussions related to a recent agreement with the United States. He said that the manner in which the deal was finalised, its economic implications, and its potential impact on Indian farmers would inevitably come under scrutiny if a full debate were allowed.
According to Gandhi, the Budget discussion would also expose broader policy concerns, including how international trade decisions are being taken without adequate consultation or transparency. He argued that Parliament exists to question executive decisions, but the government is attempting to limit debate to avoid political and policy accountability.
The remarks come amid repeated disruptions in Parliament, with Opposition parties accusing the Speaker and the ruling side of restricting their participation. The government, however, has maintained that parliamentary procedures are being followed and has dismissed Opposition allegations as politically motivated.
