Amidst a brewing controversy following a viral video depicting him beating up a student, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has stirred further attention by asserting that Indians host weddings abroad to facilitate performances by Pakistani artistes. Since the 2016 Uri attack, there has been a prohibition on Pakistani artistes performing in India, prompting Indians to organize destination weddings overseas to circumvent the ban.
In a recent conversation with YouTuber Adeel Asif, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan remarked, “Since we couldn’t travel to India, Indians… I would like to give them some credit, they started hosting their destination weddings in foreign countries because India does not allow Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Shafqat Amanat Ali, Atif Aslam to come in and perform.” He expressed gratitude towards Indian audiences for their desire to have artistes like him and Atif Aslam perform at their weddings despite the logistical challenges.
Despite the ban on Pakistani artistes, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s music remains immensely popular in India. However, in certain instances, his songs in Bollywood productions have been replaced following the ban. In 2023, the Bombay High Court dismissed a plea seeking a ban on Indian firms hiring Pakistani artistes, a decision upheld by the Supreme Court. Nonetheless, Pakistani artistes have yet to resume their involvement in Indian cinema.
Meanwhile, Atif Aslam, known for his rendition of popular Bollywood tracks like “Dil Diyan Gallan” and “Tera Hone Laga Hoon,” is reportedly preparing for a Bollywood comeback. According to a report by Box Office Worldwide, Atif is set to lend his voice to a song for the upcoming Bollywood film “Love Story of 90s.” The producers expressed excitement about Atif’s return to the Indian film industry after a hiatus of 7-8 years, promising a treat for his fans with his contribution to their project.
As Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s remarks add fuel to the ongoing debate surrounding Pakistani artistes in India, Atif Aslam’s anticipated return to Bollywood raises expectations among fans eagerly awaiting his comeback.
