In a significant development for the proposed greenfield Pune International Airport at Purandar, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has instructed authorities to initiate the land acquisition process. Reports indicate that a notification for the land acquisition will be issued soon, marking a crucial step ahead of the Maharashtra assembly elections.

The establishment of a dedicated international airport in Pune has been long anticipated and is seen as a vital necessity for the region. The new airport at Purandar is expected to be a game changer, not only for Pune but for the entire surrounding region, fostering industrial growth and enhancing connectivity. The proposed airport’s location is strategically close to the upcoming Pune Outer Ring Road (ORR), which will facilitate easier access for passengers.

The state government plans to collaborate with the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) to expedite the land acquisition process. Uday Samant, the state industries minister, emphasized the importance of the Purandar Airport project for the state’s overall development, particularly for the residents of Pune. He stated, “The Purandar Airport project is crucial for the overall development of the state, especially for Punekars.”

Samant further assured that the land acquisition process would gain momentum in the coming days. He revealed, “In the next three to four days, the Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, and I will hold a detailed meeting on the land acquisition. Within the next eight days, we will finalize a model for the project and subsequently begin the acquisition.”

The airport project in Pune’s Purandar area has been in the pipeline for several years, reflecting the city’s rising population and its evolution as a hub for IT and manufacturing over the past decade. The international airport is viewed as a critical infrastructure project essential for accommodating Pune’s growing demands.

Additionally, Murlidhar Mohol, the MP from Pune and the state civil aviation minister, announced shortly after taking office in June that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) have approved the proposed airport at its original site in Purandar. This approval has cleared all technical hurdles for the project, paving the way for its realization.

The commencement of land acquisition signifies a major leap forward for Pune’s development, promising enhanced connectivity and economic growth in the region. As the process unfolds, local stakeholders and residents are hopeful for the timely completion of this much-needed infrastructure project.
