Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid heartfelt tribute to the 40 brave personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force who lost their lives in the 2019 Pulwama terror attack, calling their sacrifice “a lasting source of strength for the nation.”

Marking the seventh anniversary of the February 14 tragedy, the Prime Minister said, “We remember with deep respect the courageous heroes who made the supreme sacrifice in Pulwama in 2019. Their dedication to the nation will always inspire generations. India stands united in honouring their bravery.”

The deadly attack took place when a CRPF convoy traveling from Jammu to Srinagar was targeted near Lethapora in Pulwama district. A suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into one of the buses, triggering a massive blast that killed 40 personnel and injured many others. The Pakistan-based terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed had claimed responsibility for the attack.

The incident led to one of the most tense stand-offs between India and Pakistan in recent years. In response, India withdrew Pakistan’s Most Favoured Nation trade status and launched diplomatic efforts globally to isolate terror networks operating from across the border. Days later, the Indian Air Force carried out air strikes on terror infrastructure in Balakot, marking a decisive shift in India’s counter-terror posture.

The National Investigation Agency conducted an extensive probe into the bombing, revealing that a large quantity of high-grade explosives had been used. Investigators relied on forensic evidence and DNA analysis to identify the attacker and unravel the support network behind the assault. The attack also triggered sweeping changes in convoy security protocols, including revised movement procedures, enhanced aerial transport for troops, drone surveillance, and electronic countermeasures to prevent similar incidents.

Internationally, India pushed for greater scrutiny of terror financing mechanisms, working closely with the Financial Action Task Force to press for accountability. The Pulwama attack became a turning point in India’s internal security framework and influenced several strategic decisions in the months that followed.

Today, memorial ceremonies, candlelight tributes, and prayers are being held across the country. The memorial site at Lethapora stands as a solemn reminder of the sacrifice made by the fallen jawans. Seven years on, the nation continues to honour their memory with a renewed pledge to combat terrorism and safeguard national security.
