Srinagar: Members of the Municipality Committee and Traders Federation of Handwara staged a joint protest on Tuesday against the Power Development Department (PDD) over frequent power outages in the municipal town.

The protesters, led by Masroor Banday – Chairman Municipality Committee Handwara and Aijaz Ahmad Sofi – President Traders Federation Handwara, assembled at the main-chowk, chanting slogans against the Power Development Department (PDD) over ‘unscheduled power cuts.’

“The Power Development Department (PDD) has miserably failed to provide uninterrupted supply to Handwara town which in turn is causing huge inconvenience to the shopkeepers and local residents alike”, said Chairman of Municipality Committee Handwara, Masroor Banday.

“Instead of ensuring supply, the department has been on a mission to increase tariffs that too without any prior information or consultation with the customers”, Banday said.

Banday further warned, “We are taking this occasion to give an ultimatum to the PDD that if the issue is not resolved within the next three days, we will sit on a hunger strike.”
