Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, a prominent figure in the Congress party, has lashed out at the Centre, accusing it of spreading misleading information regarding the dissolution of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). Vadra alleged that the suspension of WFI activities was a ploy to create confusion and shield a BJP Member of Parliament who faces serious allegations of sexual harassment by female wrestlers.
In a scathing critique, the Congress general secretary highlighted the BJP’s alleged pattern of protecting accused individuals while subjecting victims to undue suffering, especially in cases of crimes against women. “The BJP is orchestrating false news about the wrestling federation’s dissolution. The federation remains intact, but its operations have been halted to shield the accused. Is suppressing the voices of aggrieved women the government’s desperate tactic?” Vadra questioned in a Hindi post.
Drawing attention to the plight of renowned athletes who brought honor to the nation and subsequently accused a BJP MP of sexual misconduct, Vadra criticized the government’s staunch support of the accused while neglecting the torment faced by the victims. “The victims faced torment while the accused was rewarded. Even the Prime Minister and the Home Minister turned a blind eye to the matter,” she condemned.
Vadra underscored the disregard shown by the accused BJP MP, alleging that he ensured the forthcoming national-level competitions would be hosted in his own district, casting a shadow of injustice over the entire affair. She highlighted the distressing consequences of the situation, including the resignation of Olympic medalist Sakshi Malik from wrestling and the return of awards by disillusioned athletes.
The Congress leader highlighted the government’s approach toward cases of atrocities against women, accusing it of shielding the accused while inflicting hardship upon the victims. She expressed concern over the discouragement faced by women striving for leadership roles across various domains due to the actions of those in power.
Vadra concluded by emphasizing that the citizens of the country, particularly its women, are keenly observing these developments. Her remarks shed light on the larger narrative of justice, accountability, and the treatment of women within the political and sporting spheres, urging for a more transparent and equitable approach from those in positions of authority.
