Delhi: Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge raised serious concerns over the reliability of electronic voting machines (EVMs) during a recent statement, highlighting issues in recent local elections. Speaking on the matter, Kharge said, “In a recent gram panchayat election in Haryana, the EVM decision was reversed. The EC ordered a recount of the polls, and the person who had won the election lost it. When there are so many anomalies, and the Election Commission refuses to answer any queries, then we will have to look for alternatives.”
Kharge also referenced historical debates over EVM transparency, pointing out that even the BJP had expressed doubts in the past. “The then-BJP secretary had written a book titled ‘Democracy at Risk through EVMs’. The BJP itself is confused about what to say on this issue,” he added, underscoring the bipartisan concerns over the technology.
