Prashant Kishor Targets BJP Stronghold as Jan Suraaj Gears Up for High-Stakes Bankipur By-Election

Political strategist-turned-leader Prashant Kishor has signalled an aggressive electoral push by his Jan Suraaj Party (JSP), announcing that the party intends to contest the upcoming by-election in Bankipur, one of Bihar’s most closely watched constituencies.

The seat became vacant following the elevation of senior BJP leader Nitin Nabin to the Rajya Sabha and his subsequent rise to a key national leadership role within the party.

Bypoll Framed as Political Performance Test

Jan Suraaj leaders are portraying the upcoming election as more than a routine bypoll, arguing that it offers voters an opportunity to assess the performance of the current government and its promises on development, jobs, education and migration.

The party believes the contest could become an important indicator of public sentiment toward the ruling establishment in Bihar.

Challenging a Long-Standing BJP Bastion

Bankipur has traditionally been considered one of the BJP’s strongest electoral territories. The constituency has remained firmly under the party’s control for decades and has repeatedly delivered decisive victories for BJP candidates.

Despite the constituency’s history, Jan Suraaj leaders maintain that a focused campaign and a strong local candidate could make the contest more competitive than previous elections.

Kishor Keeps Candidate Question Open

While speculation continues over whether Prashant Kishor himself could enter the electoral fray, the Jan Suraaj chief has avoided making a direct commitment regarding his candidature.

Party insiders suggest that the final decision will be taken after consultations with senior leaders and local workers as preparations for the by-election gather momentum.

Education Concerns Remain Central Theme

Alongside electoral issues, Kishor also highlighted concerns surrounding recurring examination controversies, arguing that structural reforms are needed within the education sector.

Jan Suraaj has consistently attempted to position itself as a platform focused on governance reforms, youth issues and public accountability.

Opportunity for Political Revival

The by-election comes at an important time for Jan Suraaj. In the last Bihar Assembly elections, the party contested a large number of seats but failed to secure representation in the legislature.

Despite the disappointing electoral outcome, party leaders believe the Bankipur contest offers an opportunity to rebuild momentum and demonstrate that Jan Suraaj remains a relevant political force in the state.
