Mumbai: A shocking incident has come to light from Umarkhed Tehsil in Yavatmal district in Maharashtra. Last Sunday a woman and her new-born child tragically lost their lives due to potholes and poor road conditions.
The incident happened in Bandi village wherein a 30-year-old Natasha Thoke was in labour pains and her family decided to take her to nearest government Primary Health Centre (PHC). Family called for an autorickshaw to go to the hospital. But due to the poor condition of the road between Bandi to Bitergaon town, Natasha delivered her baby on the way in the autorickshaw itself. But due to the pathetic condition of roads she and her new born baby could not tolerate the vibrations and shocks of the road and both died in the autorickshaw when they were just 2 km away from nearest PHC.
Locals in this area are really angry over the local authorities. In the past many times, they had requested them to repair the same road, many protests had also happened for the same purpose. Many request letters were sent to Maharashtra government’s Public Works Department (PWD) to repair the same road but no response was given to the demands.
The 30-year-old Natasha and her new born baby lost their lives due to the same bad road. Local villagers are asking the question, does this government want more lives to end on this road then they will wake up?
Due to the bad road condition, it becomes very difficult and painful for people to reach or have access to PHC at Umarkhed. Patients do not get medical treatment on time as due to the potholes and bad roads they cannot reach the hospital on time or the nearest medical care centre.
After last Sunday’s incident local people feel that if the condition of the roads were better Natasha and her baby could have been saved as they would have got medical treatment in time.
