Vatican City: The Roman Catholic Church is in mourning following the death of Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, at the age of 88. He died peacefully at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta at 7:35 a.m., as confirmed by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber.

“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church,” Cardinal Farrell announced from Casa Santa Marta.

Reflecting on the late pontiff’s legacy, Cardinal Farrell added, “He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, made history in 2013 when he became the first Latin American and Jesuit pope to lead the Catholic Church. Over his 12-year papacy, he championed causes of social justice, inclusion, climate responsibility, and interfaith dialogue.

In recent years, his health had been in visible decline. He was admitted to the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital on February 14 after a prolonged battle with bronchitis. Despite health challenges, he remained a steadfast spiritual leader until his final days.
