New Delhi: Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma has found himself at the center of a political controversy after Congress spokesperson Dr. Shama Mohamed criticized him for being “overweight” and an “unimpressive captain.” Her remarks sparked a fierce backlash, with BJP leaders and journalists coming to Sharma’s defense.
Following India’s 44-run victory over New Zealand in the Champions Trophy, Mohamed took to social media to attack Rohit after his 15-run performance. “Rohit Sharma is fat for a sportsman! Needs to lose weight! And of course, the most unimpressive captain India has ever had!” she posted on X. Responding to a user, she further questioned Rohit’s legacy, comparing him unfavorably to legends like Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli.

Her comments triggered outrage, especially from former Congress leader Radhika Khera, who is now with the BJP. She slammed the Congress party, accusing it of disrespecting athletes.
“This is the same Congress that humiliated athletes for decades, denied them recognition, and now dares to mock a cricketing legend? The party that thrives on nepotism is lecturing a self-made champion?” Khera posted on social media.

Taking a jibe at Rahul Gandhi, Khera added, “Rohit Sharma led India to a World Cup victory, while Rahul Gandhi can’t even lead his own party without sinking it into chaos!”
Noted journalist Rajdeep Sardesai also defended Rohit, highlighting his multiple IPL titles and his leadership of one of the best white-ball teams in the world. Mohamed, however, stood by her criticism, pointing to Rohit’s decision to open in the MCG Test against Australia, which she claimed “backfired totally,” and India’s loss in the 2023 World Cup final under his captaincy.
Rohit Sharma Eyes Redemption in Champions Trophy Semifinal
Amid the political drama, Rohit Sharma is focused on silencing his critics as India prepares for a high-stakes Champions Trophy semifinal against Australia. Having remained unbeaten in the group stage, India is looking to avenge its heartbreaking loss to Australia in the 2023 World Cup final.
However, Rohit’s recent struggles with the bat remain a major talking point. While he has been getting starts, he has failed to convert them into big scores—something India desperately needs at the top of the order. As the Men in Blue gear up for a clash against an in-form Australian side, the pressure is on Rohit to deliver, not just as a captain but also as a key batter.
