PM Modi Unveils ‘Sudarshan Chakra Mission’ to Build India’s Most Advanced Defence Shield by 2035

Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi used his record-breaking 103-minute Independence Day address on Friday to announce one of India’s most ambitious military projects yet — the Sudarshan Chakra Mission, a next-generation defence shield designed to protect the nation’s most critical sites from future threats.

Inspired by Lord Krishna’s legendary weapon, the Sudarshan Chakra will serve as a high-tech protective grid for strategic and civilian locations, including railway stations, hospitals, and religious sites. “By 2035, we will expand, strengthen, and modernise this national security shield… Drawing inspiration from Lord Shri Krishna, we have chosen the path of the Sudarshan Chakra,” Modi declared from the Red Fort.

According to the Prime Minister, the system will be equipped with a Precise Target System and cutting-edge weaponry capable of both intercepting enemy attacks and launching decisive retaliatory strikes. The initiative, he said, is part of a broader effort to ensure India remains prepared as the nature of warfare rapidly evolves.

Referencing Operation Sindoor, in which India successfully neutralised missile and drone strikes from Pakistan using technology developed over the past decade, Modi stressed the urgency of adapting to new forms of conflict. “In the next ten years, we are committed to building a strong Sudarshan Chakra shield to deal with the changing nature of war,” he said.

The announcement was delivered during the longest Independence Day speech of Modi’s tenure — surpassing his 2024 record of 98 minutes. His addresses have progressively grown in length and detail since 2015, when he first set a benchmark with an 88-minute speech.
