Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a significant journey to Kolkata, inaugurating and laying the foundation stone for various projects valued at a staggering ₹15,400 crore. This event marks his second visit to West Bengal within a span of five days, underscoring the government’s commitment to bolstering infrastructure and development in the region.
Among the notable projects inaugurated by PM Modi is the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section of Kolkata Metro’s East-West corridor, which heralds India’s maiden foray into underwater Metro services. Spanning a distance of 4.8 kilometers, this groundbreaking initiative comes at a cost of ₹4,965 crore and features the deepest Metro station in the country, situated 30 meters below ground level in Howrah. The East-West Metro corridor will play a pivotal role in connecting key areas such as the IT hub Salt Lake Sector V, enhancing urban mobility and fostering economic growth.
While the inauguration ceremony marks a significant milestone, passenger services for the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section will commence at a later date, according to Central Railways.
In addition to the Metro inauguration, PM Modi flagged off several other train services aimed at bolstering urban mobility in Kolkata. These include the Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay and the Taratala-Majerhat Metro sections, further augmenting the city’s public transportation network.
Furthermore, PM Modi dedicated several other projects across different states during his visit, including the Pune Metro Ruby Hall Clinic to Ramwadi stretch, Kochi Metro Rail Phase I Extension project, Agra Metro’s Taj East Gate to Mankameshwar stretch, and the Duhai-Modinagar (North) section of the Delhi-Meerut RRTS Corridor.
Later in the day, PM Modi is scheduled to address a public rally in Barasat, North 24 Parganas district, underscoring the government’s commitment to engaging with the people and addressing their concerns.
This visit follows PM Modi’s recent trip to West Bengal, during which he addressed rallies in Hooghly’s Arambagh and Nadia’s Krishnanagar. During these addresses, PM Modi condemned the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government for alleged atrocities on women in Sandeshkhali, calling for a united effort to ensure TMC’s defeat in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
PM Modi’s extensive itinerary underscores the government’s proactive approach towards fostering development and addressing the needs of the people, reaffirming its commitment to building a prosperous and resilient India.
