PM Modi Reaffirms Commitment to Farmers Amid US Tariff Hike; Warns India Won’t Bow to Pressure

New Delhi: A day after the United States announced an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods—raising the total to 50%—Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a firm stand, declaring that the interests of Indian farmers, fishermen, and dairy producers will remain non-negotiable for his government.

Speaking at the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New Delhi on Thursday, PM Modi emphasized that India is prepared to face international pressure, even if it comes at a personal or political cost. His remarks come in the wake of growing tension between New Delhi and Washington, following the US administration’s escalating trade restrictions over India’s continued purchase and resale of Russian crude oil.

US President Donald Trump, who signed an executive order this week imposing additional tariffs on Indian products, has accused India of indirectly aiding Russia’s war in Ukraine by profiting off discounted Russian oil. The new tariff structure—taking the total import duty to 50%—will come into full effect from August 27, with some exceptions carved out for specific goods.

In addition to tariffs, Trump has warned of potential “secondary sanctions” on India, hinting at further punitive economic measures if India continues energy trade with Russia. The statements, made during an informal press briefing outside the White House, have triggered sharp reactions in global diplomatic circles.

Despite the growing economic pressure, PM Modi took the opportunity at the agri-conference to reiterate that his government’s primary responsibility lies with the welfare of its farming community. He stressed that agriculture and biodiversity remain at the heart of India’s development strategy, inspired in part by the legacy of Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, the father of India’s Green Revolution.

During the event, Modi also unveiled a commemorative stamp and coin honoring Dr. Swaminathan’s contributions to agricultural science. The Prime Minister highlighted the late scientist’s vision of “bio-happiness,” a concept linking biodiversity to rural prosperity—a vision Modi said still guides India’s rural development efforts.
