Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the newly built integrated terminal at Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport in Guwahati, signalling a major expansion of aviation infrastructure in Northeast India. The modern Terminal 2 is designed to handle over 13 million passengers annually, significantly boosting the airport’s capacity and improving travel facilities for the region.
Built at an estimated cost of ₹4,000 crore, the terminal is part of a larger ₹5,000-crore airport development project. Officials said a key component of this expansion is the establishment of Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities, which are expected to create skilled jobs and reduce India’s dependence on overseas aircraft servicing.
The upgraded airport is being positioned as a central aviation hub for the Northeast and a vital link to Southeast Asia. With enhanced connectivity and upgraded infrastructure, authorities believe the project will drive tourism, strengthen trade routes, and accelerate economic activity across Assam and neighbouring states.
Spanning nearly 1.4 lakh square metres, the terminal blends modern design with elements inspired by Assam’s natural diversity and cultural heritage. During the visit, the Prime Minister also unveiled an 80-foot statue of Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi, Assam’s first Chief Minister, outside the airport complex. The statue was created by renowned sculptor Ram Sutar, whose works include several iconic national monuments.
Addressing the gathering, PM Modi criticised previous governments for neglecting Assam and the Northeast, claiming the region was overlooked in earlier development plans. He said his government has placed the Northeast at the heart of its “Act East” strategy, transforming Assam into a key connector between India and ASEAN nations.
