Sambhal: What was meant to be a moment of celebration turned into an unspeakable tragedy when a speeding Bolero carrying a marriage party met with a devastating accident in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district, killing eight people including the groom. The incident has shocked the local community and drawn national attention, prompting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to express condolences and announce financial support for the victims’ families.
The tragic accident took place on Friday evening in the Junawai Police Station area. According to police reports, the Bolero vehicle, carrying members of a wedding procession from Hargovindpur village, lost control and crashed into the boundary wall of Janata Inter College in Junawai. The impact of the collision caused the vehicle to overturn, instantly killing five passengers on the spot, including the groom.
Emergency services rushed to the scene and transported five critically injured people to Aligarh Medical College. Tragically, three of them – identified as Ravi, Komal, and Madhu – died on the way. The remaining two are currently under medical care and battling for their lives.
All victims were reportedly headed to Bilsi in Budaun district to attend the wedding celebrations. Local eyewitnesses stated that the vehicle was being driven at a very high speed, and the driver appeared to have lost control while negotiating a turn. The force of the crash was such that rescue teams had to use a JCB machine to cut open the wreckage and retrieve the bodies and injured.
Responding swiftly to the tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences and sanctioned an ex-gratia amount of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the families of each deceased, and ₹50,000 for the injured.
In a post shared by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on social media platform X, Modi wrote: “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives in an accident in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon.”
