New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced the launch of a nationwide “GST Utsav” beginning on the first day of Navratri, calling it a festival of savings that will directly benefit citizens across the country.

Addressing the nation, the Prime Minister said that from September 22, people would be able to purchase their favourite items at reduced prices as new GST reforms come into effect.

“Next-gen GST reforms are being implemented from tomorrow. It is like a GST saving festival for every Indian. From tomorrow, you will be able to buy your favourite items with ease,” PM Modi said.

Greeting the nation on Navratri, he emphasized that the new phase of GST will benefit common citizens, farmers, MSMEs, middle-class families, women, and youth alike.

The Union government had earlier, on September 4, announced sweeping GST rate cuts covering a wide range of products, from automobiles to essential consumer goods.

This reform, popularly being referred to as GST 2.0, introduces a simplified two-slab structure of 5% and 18%, while a higher 40% slab will be levied only on super luxury, sin, and demerit goods.

The landmark reforms were cleared at the 56th GST Council meeting, where both the Centre and states reached a consensus. PM Modi highlighted that this cooperative spirit between different levels of government is a sign of India’s united progress.

“This decision will make goods cheaper, encourage industries, and strengthen India’s economy,” he added.

Observers note that this marks the biggest indirect tax reform since the GST rollout in July 2017 and could further accelerate India’s growth momentum.
