PM Modi, Iran President Discuss West Asia Crisis; India Stresses Diplomacy and Safe Navigation in Hormuz Strait

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian over the phone to discuss the evolving situation in West Asia, with both leaders reviewing recent developments in the region and the progress made towards easing tensions.

PM Modi Welcomes Diplomatic Progress

During the conversation, President Pezeshkian briefed Prime Minister Modi on the latest regional developments and the ongoing diplomatic efforts. The Prime Minister welcomed the recent progress achieved through negotiations and reiterated India’s consistent stand that disputes should be settled through peaceful dialogue rather than conflict.

Sharing details of the conversation on X, Prime Minister Modi said, “Spoke with the President of Iran, Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, on the recent developments in West Asia. Welcomed the progress made in the negotiations and expressed hope that continued efforts will lead to lasting peace in the region. Reiterated the importance of freedom of navigation in the Hormuz Strait for India and the World.”

India Emphasises Peace and Stability

The Prime Minister stressed that sustained diplomatic engagement remains essential for ensuring long-term peace and stability across West Asia. He also highlighted the strategic importance of uninterrupted maritime movement through the Strait of Hormuz, describing safe navigation as vital not only for India but also for global trade and energy security.

India has consistently advocated resolving international disputes through dialogue while supporting efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the region.

Fresh US-Iran Talks Planned in Doha

The leaders’ conversation comes as the United States and Iran prepare for another round of discussions in Doha, Qatar, focused on lowering tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.

According to reports, officials from both countries are expected to discuss maritime security, commercial shipping, sanctions and other unresolved issues. The negotiations are part of broader diplomatic efforts to preserve the fragile understanding reached after weeks of military tensions.

Temporary Pause in Military Activity

Reports indicate that Washington and Tehran have agreed to temporarily suspend military action while negotiations continue.

A senior US official told Axios, “We decided to stop all the kinetic activity,” referring to the suspension of military strikes and related operations.

Another US official said both sides would stand down “for now” and added that “vessels can move freely” as technical-level discussions continue.

The upcoming meeting, which was originally planned in Switzerland to address Iran’s nuclear programme, has reportedly been shifted to Doha following recent military exchanges, with the immediate focus now centred on ensuring stability in the Strait of Hormuz and protecting international shipping routes.

The renewed diplomatic engagement is being closely watched internationally as governments seek to maintain peace in one of the world’s most strategically important maritime regions while safeguarding global energy supplies and commercial trade.
