A heated confrontation unfolded in the Kerala Assembly after Opposition Leader Pinarayi Vijayan accused the state government of failing to adequately address growing concerns over inflation and the rising cost of living. The disagreement culminated in a walkout by opposition members after they alleged that the government was unwilling to allow a comprehensive discussion on the issue.
Speaking during a debate on inflation, Vijayan argued that the government’s response lacked seriousness despite mounting economic pressures faced by ordinary citizens. He said the continuous rise in petrol and diesel prices had triggered a chain reaction across multiple sectors, increasing costs for transportation, agriculture, fertilisers and essential commodities.
The opposition leader warned that the situation could worsen further if global instability and ongoing international conflicts continue to affect energy markets. He maintained that fuel pricing policies adopted over the years had reduced direct government control over petroleum rates, leaving consumers vulnerable to market-driven price fluctuations.
Vijayan also questioned decisions related to international oil procurement, suggesting that geopolitical considerations had influenced energy imports and contributed to rising costs. According to him, the impact is now visible across households and businesses struggling with higher expenses.
Highlighting the burden on common citizens, he said inflation has emerged as one of the most pressing challenges facing the state, affecting purchasing power and increasing pressure on family budgets. He further urged the government to clarify its current position on taxation and economic policies, recalling earlier commitments made when the present ruling establishment came to power.
The opposition also criticised what it described as attempts to divert attention from the core issue through discussions surrounding a proposed White Paper. Vijayan insisted that economic hardships faced by the public deserved a full-fledged debate in the Assembly rather than a limited exchange.
As tensions escalated, opposition members staged a walkout in protest, accusing the government of avoiding a detailed discussion on the inflation crisis. The development added fresh political heat to an issue that is increasingly becoming a major concern for citizens across Kerala amid rising fuel and commodity prices.
