Pakistani Prime Minister Khan resorts to nuclear rhetoric at WEF 2020

Pakistani PM Khan continues to spew venom against India, as he uses international forums to issue nuclear threats, and seeks solidarity from world nations

New Delhi

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan continued to spew venom against India, as he once again used the nuclear rhetoric to capture attention at the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2020. It seems threatening New Delhi has become Islamabad’s second nature and a prime agenda of the PM Khan-led foreign policy.

Khan by mentioning nuclear weapons, at WEF 2020 in Davos, Switzerland for the second time on the global stage, has indirectly threatened India. The first instance was after the Pulwama terrorist attack when Pakistan used every other international forum with the sole purpose of opposing India. Khan even issued hollow threats of nuclear war from the United Nation’s stage.

According to reports, the Pakistani PM said on the WEF 2020 stage that tension at the border might increase because of diverting attention from the domestic protests over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and the Kashmir issue. In the interview given to the International Media Council on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the forum in Davos, he said that two such nuclear-capable countries should not even think about war.

Pulwama terror attack

Following the Pulwama attack, relations between the two countries have become very bitter. Imran Khan said that after becoming the Prime Minister, when he contacted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Pulwama attack was a huge wall between the two countries. Then, after the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu-Kashmir, things went from bad to worse. India’s Citizenship (Amendment) Act then added fuel to the fire becoming a new cornerstone for escalated tensions between the two countries.

Defeat at UN despite China’s support

In August 2019, Pakistan appealed at the UN Security Council (UNSC) on the Kashmir issue, but it faced defeat here too. Pakistan and its ally China internationalized the Kashmir issue at the UN, but their effort failed. The 15 members that were part of this meeting clearly said at the UNSC that Kashmir is a bilateral issue between New Delhi and Islamabad. Most of the members said that no statement or conclusion should be issued after the meeting. China made a statement in its national capacity. India, however, presented its stand saying that Kashmir is its internal matter. All the grounds that Pakistan has for this issue to be raised at the UN are baseless.
