Jammu & Kashmir: Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district witnessed rare ceasefire violations along the Line of Control (LoC) on Wednesday evening, as the Pakistan Army resorted to unprovoked firing in the Mendhar sector. In response, the Indian Army retaliated with precision, inflicting “heavy casualties” on the enemy forces, according to officials.
Pakistani troops initiated 10 to 15 rounds of fire, prompting a swift and strong counterattack from Indian forces. While the exact extent of damage on the Pakistan side remains unclear, sources confirmed that their troops suffered significant losses.
First Ceasefire Violation of 2025
Ceasefire violations have been extremely rare since India and Pakistan reaffirmed their ceasefire agreement on February 25, 2021. However, this marks the first violation of the year and the fourth cross-border incident in just five days, raising concerns over escalating tensions.
JCO Injured in Landmine Accident
In a separate incident, a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) of the Indian Army sustained minor injuries after accidentally stepping on a landmine in the same Mendhar sector. The officer, a resident of Mendhar, was on a patrol mission to monitor infiltration attempts. He was evacuated to a military hospital and is reported to be out of danger.
Heightened Vigilance Along LoC
On February 10, Lieutenant General Navin Sachdeva, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Jammu-based White Knight Corps, conducted a security review in the Rajouri sector. He was accompanied by GOC Ace of Spades and GOC Crossed Swords divisions, emphasizing the need to counter increasing hostile activities along the LoC.
The recent firing follows a series of incidents:
- On February 8, an Army patrol in Rajouri’s Keri sector came under fire from terrorists attempting to infiltrate Indian territory.
- On February 10, a soldier was hit by a cross-border bullet while manning a forward post in Rajouri’s Nowshera sector.
- On February 7, two Indian Army personnel, including a Captain, were killed in an IED blast triggered by suspected terrorists near the LoC in Akhnoor sector, Jammu.
