New Delhi: Over 77 percent of Taiwanese, while strongly believing that China was being too hostile towards their island nation, support their government in their willingness to fight for Taipei in the event of an invasive attack by Beijing’s forces. The strong anti-Chinese stance rooted by the firm determination of the Taiwanese people to defend their freedom at all cost was recorded in a survey, conducted by the Focus Survey Research (FSR).

The survey report was published by the Taiwan Center for International Strategic Studies and the Taiwan International Studies Association at a conference in Taipei on October 25.

According to the survey, when enquired about their willingness to defend the national security, more than 66 percent of respondents responded that they would fight for Taiwan if a cross-strait war breaks out in the wake of Taiwan declaring independence. While facing a large-scale invasion by China, the percentage of people willing to fight for Taiwan rose to 77.6 percent, and that of opponents fell to 15.9 percent.

When quizzed if they would work with the United States to battle China, given that Washington has increased arms sale to Taiwan, about 58.7 percent of people replied by stating a ‘yes,’ while 24.6 percent responded with a ‘no.’ In an unprecedented event of war across the Taiwan Strait, over 55.1 percent of respondents said they expected Washington to deploy its armed forces and military hardware to assist Taipei. Around 32.8 percent of respondents claimed that the United States would not come to the aid of Taiwan.

The survey focused on responses from Taiwanese citizens aged 20 or older, including those on the nation’s outlying islands. The FSR collected 1,076 valid samples, including 536 responses through landline telephones, and 540 replies through cellphones, with a margin of error of 2.99 percentage points.

The Taiwanese survey brandishing a surge in anti-Chinese sentiments seconds the recently released Pew Research Centre survey report which highlighted – how negative opinions about China have sky-rocketed among countries and reached a record high for most of the 14 countries polled.

The negative views of China reached its ‘highest points’ in nine of those countries since the research center began polling on this issue more than 10 years ago. They were Australia, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, the United States, South Korea, Spain, and Canada. The other five countries in the survey were Belgium, Denmark, France, Italy, and Japan.
