In a creative protest against the Adani scandal, Congress MPs wore black jackets emblazoned with the slogan “Modi Adani ek hain” (Modi and Adani are one) during a demonstration in Parliament on Thursday. This protest was in response to the recent indictment of billionaire Gautam Adani and his nephew by US prosecutors on charges of bribery and fraud.
The Opposition has been demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the allegations against the Adani Group. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, along with his sister Priyanka Gandhi, joined fellow Opposition MPs in displaying the jackets as a symbolic gesture. “Modi ji can’t get Adani ji investigated because if he does that, he would be getting himself investigated… Modi aur Adani ek hain. Do nahi hain, ek hain,” Rahul Gandhi said, emphasizing the connection between the Prime Minister and the industrialist.
The protest, which included MPs from Congress, AAP, RJD, Shiv Sena (UBT), DMK, and the Left parties, took place at Parliament’s Makar Dwar. The protesters raised slogans calling for a JPC probe into the alleged corruption, while a banner reading “Modi-Adani are one” was held high. However, the TMC chose not to participate in the demonstration.
Earlier, leaders of the INDIA bloc had held similar protests on the Parliament premises, echoing their demand for an investigation into the Adani Group’s dealings. The Congress party reiterated that Adani’s indictment in the US had “vindicated” their call for a JPC investigation. Rahul Gandhi had previously stated that Adani should be arrested, a stance that the Adani Group has vehemently denied, calling all allegations “baseless.”
The protest came after the Lok Sabha Secretariat issued a safety advisory, urging MPs not to obstruct movement outside Parliament gates. Despite this, opposition MPs went ahead with their symbolic demonstration, continuing their demand for accountability and transparency in the Adani case.
