New Delhi: Delhi witnessed intense political drama as senior leaders from the INDIA bloc, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and NCP chief Sharad Pawar, joined a protest march from the Parliament to the Election Commission of India (ECI). The demonstration was against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar and allegations of “voter fraud” during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The march faced stiff resistance from Delhi Police, who stopped the opposition MPs from reaching the ECI office. Samajwadi Party Chief and MP Akhilesh Yadav voiced his frustration, stating, “They are using the police to stop us,” before staging a sit-down protest. Akhilesh Yadav also made headlines by jumping over a police barricade in an attempt to continue the march.
Congress MP Syed Naseer Hussain expressed disappointment, saying, “We are not being allowed to meet the Election Commission. More than 300 MPs from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are marching here. Police are arresting MPs and blocking our path to the EC.”
The protest highlights the growing tensions around the SIR exercise in Bihar, with opposition parties accusing the ruling authorities of manipulating voter lists to influence election outcomes. The situation escalated as multiple MPs were detained or stopped by police, further intensifying the political standoff in the national capital.
