Noida Phase 2 Erupts in Violence as Workers’ Protest Over Wages Intensifies, Traffic Hit After Chilla Border Closure

Tension continues to escalate in Noida Phase 2 as a workers’ protest demanding salary hikes turned violent, triggering clashes, stone-pelting, and damage to vehicles and industrial property.

For the fourth consecutive day, large groups of workers gathered in protest, expressing anger over low wages and long working hours. Police forces have been deployed in large numbers, including PAC units, to control the situation, but unrest persists in the area.

Chilla Border closed, massive traffic congestion reported

The impact of the violence has spilled onto key routes, with authorities shutting down the Chilla Border, a crucial link between Delhi and Noida.

This has led to severe traffic congestion on the Delhi–Noida DND Flyway, causing long delays for commuters. The Delhi Traffic Police issued an advisory stating that traffic movement towards Noida has been heavily affected due to the ongoing agitation.

Commuters have been advised to avoid the Noida Link Road and use alternate routes such as Sarai Kale Khan or NH-24 via Kondli Bridge.

Protest turns violent in industrial hubs

The industrial belt of Phase 2, including the Hosiery Complex and Noida Special Economic Zone (NSEZ), witnessed large-scale unrest as thousands of workers took to the streets.

What began as a peaceful sit-in demanding better wages escalated into violent confrontations, with reports of stone-pelting and vandalism of factory premises and private vehicles. Police resorted to tear gas and baton charge to disperse the crowd.

Root cause: Low wages and long working hours

The agitation is driven by deep dissatisfaction over working conditions. Workers allege that despite working over 10 hours a day, their monthly salaries remain between ₹12,000 and ₹15,000.

Many have accused authorities, including the labour department, of ignoring repeated complaints about labour law violations.

Key demands of protesting workers

The protesters have put forward several demands, including:

  • Immediate wage revision in line with rising living costs
  • Double overtime pay as per legal norms
  • Strict enforcement of 8-hour work shifts
  • Weekly offs, bonuses, and timely salary payments
  • Issuance of salary slips and proper grievance redressal system

Administration steps in, appeals for calm

The district administration has attempted to defuse tensions by offering assurances and announcing worker welfare measures, urging employees to return to work. However, the situation remains volatile as negotiations continue.
