In a major relief for air travellers, the Central government has capped seat selection charges and directed airlines to offer at least 60% of seats free of cost on every flight. The move is expected to significantly reduce extra costs for passengers and bring more transparency to airline pricing.
The directive was issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), which asked airlines to curb the growing practice of charging passengers for seat selection. With this decision, flyers in India will now have greater access to free seating options without paying additional fees.
Push for Fairness and Transparency
According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the new guidelines aim to ensure fairness and transparency in airline booking practices. The rule mandates that a minimum of 60% of seats on any flight must be made available free of charge, ensuring that passengers are not forced to pay extra for basic services.
The decision comes at a time when India has emerged as the third-largest domestic aviation market globally, with daily passenger traffic crossing five lakh. The growth has been largely driven by government initiatives like the UDAN scheme, which has made air travel more accessible and affordable.
Passengers on Same Booking to Sit Together
In another passenger-friendly move, the DGCA has directed airlines to ensure that travellers booked under the same PNR are seated together, preferably in adjacent seats. This step is aimed at improving convenience, especially for families and groups travelling together.
New Rules for Luggage and Pets
The government has also asked airlines to adopt transparent and passenger-friendly policies for carrying sports equipment and musical instruments, subject to safety norms. In addition, airlines will now have to clearly define and display their policies regarding pet travel, ensuring better clarity for passengers.
Stronger Passenger Rights Framework
The new guidelines stress strict adherence to passenger rights, particularly in cases of delays, cancellations, or denied boarding. Airlines have been instructed to prominently display passenger rights on their websites, mobile apps, booking platforms, and airport counters.
To improve accessibility, the government has also mandated that passenger entitlements be communicated clearly in regional languages, helping a wider section of travellers understand their rights.
Focus on Better Travel Experience
The Ministry of Civil Aviation said the move is part of its broader effort to enhance passenger experience, reduce grievances, and ensure high standards across the aviation sector. With these reforms, the government aims to make flying more affordable, transparent, and passenger-friendly in India’s rapidly expanding aviation ecosystem.
