Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has emphasised that inclusiveness and harmony are integral to India’s identity, stating that a person who believes there should be no Muslims in Bharat would be acting against the core values of Hindu philosophy.
Addressing thousands of people at the ‘Universal Oneness Celebration’ held at Madison Square Garden in New York on August 29, Bhagwat spoke about coexistence, cultural diversity and the idea that humanity remains united despite differences in religion, traditions and beliefs.
The event, organised by the American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue (AHEAD) Forum, brought together members of the Indian diaspora, faith leaders and representatives of various community organisations.
Bhagwat Highlights ‘Unity in Diversity’
During his address, the RSS chief said that diversity is a natural feature of society and should be respected rather than viewed as a source of conflict. He stressed that India’s civilisational values have always encouraged people of different faiths and communities to live together.
Referring to the place of Muslims within India’s social fabric, Bhagwat said that the idea of excluding any community was inconsistent with Hindu values. “Any Hindu who believes there should be no Muslims in Bharat would cease to be a Hindu.”
He added that while people may follow different paths, they ultimately share a common human identity and should work towards mutual understanding and harmony.
‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ Message
The gathering was centred around the ancient Indian philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, meaning “the world is one family.” Bhagwat described this principle as an important part of India’s cultural heritage and said it promotes respect, acceptance and cooperation among different communities.
According to organisers, the programme aimed to strengthen dialogue among faith groups and encourage civic engagement among the Indian diaspora.
Bhagwat also urged people of Indian origin living abroad to contribute positively to both their adopted countries and their ancestral homeland while upholding values of social responsibility.
Part of RSS Centenary Outreach
Bhagwat’s visit to the United States forms part of the RSS’s centenary-year outreach initiatives among overseas Indian communities.
The New York event was attended by representatives from several organisations and focused on themes such as cultural exchange, interfaith understanding and community service.
Alongside the Madison Square Garden programme, Bhagwat also participated in meetings with community groups and visited religious and cultural institutions during his US tour.
His remarks on diversity and coexistence have drawn attention at a time when discussions around identity, inclusion and social harmony continue to remain significant topics both in India and among the global Indian community.
