“Next Gen GST Reform” Sparks Festive Cheer in UP Markets, Boosts Jobs and Consumption

Lucknow: The rollout of the ‘Next Gen GST Reform’ on the first day of Sharadiya Navratri has energized Uttar Pradesh’s markets, offering relief to consumers and traders alike. Addressing a press conference at Universal Booksellers, Hazratganj, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath highlighted the reforms’ dual benefits: easing the financial burden on citizens while stimulating market activity and employment opportunities.

“The reforms are delivering direct relief to the public while strengthening the market and creating new avenues of employment,” the CM said, emphasizing that Uttar Pradesh, India’s largest consumer state, stands to benefit the most from the tax cuts.

Under the new measures, GST has been scrapped on notebooks, pencils, and other educational materials, while most essential household items now fall under the 0% or 5% tax slab. Additionally, 33 life-saving medicines are fully exempt. Yogi Adityanath noted that the reforms have boosted consumption, encouraged higher production, and opened new employment opportunities for youth—providing timely relief during the festive season.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the fiscal impact of the reforms. Nationwide GST collections have surged from ₹7 lakh crore to ₹22 lakh crore since launch, while Uttar Pradesh’s collections more than doubled—from ₹49,000 crore to over ₹1.15 lakh crore. “This demonstrates both stronger compliance and stronger consumption,” he added.

Prior to the press briefing, Yogi toured Hazratganj market, interacting with traders and shoppers, and distributed pamphlets and banners explaining the reforms. Many traders and consumers expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Finance Minister for the tax relief.

Calling the reform “a decisive step against inflation”, CM Yogi stressed that reduced GST rates will not only ease household budgets but also expand trade opportunities across the state.
