West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday blamed the Bharatiya Janata Party after the Supreme Court of India criticised the state over the gherao of judicial officers in Malda. Speaking at a public meeting in Sagardighi, she distanced her government from the incident and said she had no direct control over the situation.
Links Incident to Public Anger Over SIR
Banerjee said the unrest was linked to public anger over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls. She claimed that people were frustrated with the process and that she was not aware of who carried out the gherao of judicial officers.
‘BJP Gameplan’ to Disrupt Elections
The Chief Minister alleged that the Malda incident was part of a larger “gameplan” by the BJP. According to her, the party is anticipating defeat in the upcoming Assembly elections and is attempting to create instability to get the polls cancelled and impose President’s rule in the state.
Targets Election Commission Over Security Lapse
Banerjee also criticised the Election Commission of India, accusing it of failing to maintain law and order. She said the responsibility of providing security lies with the authorities overseeing the election process and questioned why adequate protection was not given to the judicial officers.
Political Tensions Rise Ahead of Polls
The remarks come amid rising political tensions in West Bengal following the Supreme Court’s strong observations on the Malda incident. With elections approaching, the issue has intensified the war of words between the ruling TMC and the BJP, signalling a heated political battle in the state.
