Mumbai: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged as the dominant force in the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) elections, comfortably moving past the halfway mark as vote counting progresses. The civic polls, held on January 15 after an eight-year gap, were part of a larger electoral exercise covering multiple municipal corporations across Maharashtra.
According to the latest available results, counting has been completed in 109 out of the total 111 wards in Navi Mumbai. The BJP has secured victories in 67 wards, placing it firmly in control of the civic body. The Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena has also put up a strong performance, winning 29 seats. In contrast, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) has managed to win only two wards, while one seat has gone to an Independent candidate.
Voting in Navi Mumbai took place across 28 wards, with more than 1,100 polling booths set up to facilitate smooth polling. Interestingly, despite being allies at the state level, BJP and Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) contested the NMMC elections independently, making the BJP’s clear majority even more politically significant.
The Navi Mumbai outcome mirrors a broader trend seen across Maharashtra, where the BJP has maintained a commanding position in several key urban civic bodies. In Mumbai, the BJP–Shiv Sena-led Mahayuti alliance has also crossed the majority threshold in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), strengthening its grip on urban local governance. Meanwhile, the alliance of Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has trailed behind, with the Congress registering only a marginal presence.
