New Delhi: On the occasion of National Voters Day, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh launched a scathing attack on the Election Commission of India (ECI), alleging that its independence and professionalism have been severely undermined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. His remarks sparked a fresh debate on the credibility of the country’s electoral process.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Ramesh expressed grave concerns over the functioning of the ECI, calling its decisions “shockingly partisan” and accusing it of failing to uphold the Constitution’s principles. Referring to the recent Maharashtra and Haryana Assembly elections, he claimed that the Commission’s response to allegations raised by the Congress party has been deeply disappointing.

“Sadly, over the past decade, the professionalism and independence of the Election Commission have been severely compromised by the PM-HM duo. Some of its decisions are now under challenge in the Supreme Court. Its stand on the concerns raised on the recent assembly elections in Haryana and Maharashtra has been shockingly partisan,” Jairam Ramesh wrote.

He further criticized the celebratory tone surrounding National Voters Day, suggesting it masked deeper issues within the electoral system. “There will be a lot of self-congratulation today, but that will not obscure the fact that the Election Commission, as it has been functioning, makes a mockery of the Constitution and is an insult to the voters themselves,” he added.

Ramesh’s comments come amid growing criticism of the ECI’s actions in recent elections, with opposition leaders questioning its ability to conduct free and fair polls. Several of the Commission’s decisions, including its stance on electoral irregularities and alleged favoritism toward the ruling party, are currently under judicial review in the Supreme Court.

As the country marks National Voters Day, the Congress leader’s remarks underscore the ongoing political tussle over the impartiality of the institution tasked with safeguarding the democratic process. While the ruling BJP is yet to respond to Ramesh’s allegations, the debate surrounding electoral integrity is likely to intensify in the lead-up to upcoming state and national elections.
