Nashik: 22 die due to interrupted oxygen supply at civic hospital, government announces 5 lakh compensation to family

Around 22 people have died at Nashik’s Zakir Hussain municipal hospital due to interrupted oxygen supply. “As per the current information, 22 people have died due to the interrupted supply of oxygen at the Zakir Hussain municipal hospital. The patients were on ventilators as well as on oxygen supply, which got interrupted after the leakage in the oxygen supply tank,” district collector Suraj Mandhare said to reporters.

He said the municipal corporation immediately shifted the cylinders from the other facilities where oxygen demand was not high, reported news agency.

Earlier, FDA Minister Dr Rajendra Shingane had said that at least 11 patients who were on ventilators at a hospital in Nashik have died. He further said that the Maharashtra government will look into the matter and conduct a thorough probe.

However, the Maharashtra government has announced 5 lakh compensation to the kins of the deceased.

Over the shocking incident, former Chief Minister of Maharashtra and opposition leader Devendra Fadnavis, Union Minister Amit Shah, Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Aaditya Thackeray, Nationalist Congress Party’s Sachin Sawant and others have expressed concern.

Mr Fadnavis said, “What happened in Nashik is terrible. It’s being said that 11 people died which is very disturbing.” The former CM has demanded that the other patients should be helped and must be shifted if needed. Also, he has demanded a detailed inquiry in the case.

PM Modi also expressed grief over the tragedy and said, “The tragedy at a hospital in Nashik because of oxygen tank leakage is heart-wrenching. Anguished by the loss of lives due to it. Condolences to the bereaved families in this sad hour.”

Union Minister Amit Shah said, “Distressed to hear the news of the accident. I express my deepest condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones in this incident.”

Aaditya Thackeray offering condolences said, “The accident at Zakir Hussain Hospital is extremely unfortunate. We all share the grief of all these families. Guardian Minister Chhagan Bhujbal and all the officials are in touch with Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. This unfortunate incident will be thoroughly investigated.”

Maharashtra governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari said, “Deeply anguished to know about death of #COVID19 patients in unfortunate incident of Oxygen tanker leakage at Nashik’s Dr Zakir Hussain Hospital. I convey my condolences to next of those who lost lives & speedy recovery to affected persons” .
