Mumbai: Mumbai is gearing up for the operational launch of Phase 2 of its first underground Metro project, the Aqua Line, which will open to the public on Saturday, May 10. Before the public debut, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will take a preview ride on Friday, May 9, from Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) to Siddhivinayak station.

The new 9.6-km underground stretch will extend the existing Metro Line 3 corridor from BKC to Acharya Atre Chowk in Worli Naka, adding six new stations along the way. These stations will connect areas such as Dharavi and Worli, providing much-needed relief to Mumbai’s crowded transport system. This follows the recent safety clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), marking the final step before commencing commercial operations.

Currently, a 12.69-km stretch of Metro Line 3, from Aarey to BKC, is already operational, serving commuters with 11 stations, including 10 underground and one at-grade station at Aarey, which also houses the Metro 3 car shed.

The 33.5-km Metro Line 3 corridor, implemented by Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL), a joint venture between the Government of India and the Maharashtra Government, will eventually connect Colaba to SEEPZ. The line is expected to handle a daily ridership of 14 lakh in its first year, significantly easing the burden on the city’s public transport system.

The project aims to enhance Mumbai’s mass rapid transit network, reduce road congestion, and alleviate pressure on the suburban railway system. Once fully operational, Metro Line 3 will cut daily vehicle trips by 6.5 lakh, reduce average travel times, and contribute to lowering pollution levels.

Despite the growing population, Mumbai’s public transport share has dropped from 88% in 1991 to 65% in 2017. Metro and Monorail together currently account for just 2% of the city’s transport share, according to the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (2016). In comparison, suburban railways handle 43%, and BEST buses contribute 20% of the city’s transport usage.
