Mumbai’s first death due to Corona’s Delta Plus variant reported

Mumbai: The threat of Delta Plus variant spreading is increasing in Maharashtra including Mumbai. According to information received from the Health Department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), an elderly woman above 60 years of age from the eastern suburb has died due to Delta Plus variant. This is the first victim of the said variant of the virus.

Considering the emerging situation, the Municipal Corporation has decided to do genome sequencing of serious Covid patients admitted in hospitals, patients who died as soon as they were admitted, patients staying in the hospital for a long time to know whether any of these variants are victims.

The Delta and Delta Plus variants of Coronavirus have created panic in many countries of the world. In the second wave that came in Maharashtra, the delta variant has also created a lot of furores. Now patients of Delta Plus are also getting started detected. The said variant was confirmed in the first 4 patients in Mumbai, but on Wednesday it has been confirmed in 7 more patients.

With this the total number has gone up to 11. Now the BMC has become even more alert after seeing the increasing number of people suffering from Delta Plus.

On this, Additional Municipal Commissioner, Suresh Kakani said, “with the help of the Genome Sequencing machine, we will now examine the samples of serious corona patients admitted to hospitals in Mumbai. At present, a list of serious patients is being prepared by the officials. Samples of patients will be taken and after testing it will be tried to found out whether they are suffering from the Delta Plus variant or not.

After the severely ill patients, samples of patients with moderate and mild symptoms will also be taken. So far, two Delta Plus variant virus infected elderly women have died in the state. The first reported death was that of an 80-year-old woman in Ratnagiri”.

A senior health department official said that “the Municipal Corporation has got a big relief after getting the GC machine. The machine will test 384 samples at a time. We will get the result in just 3 to 4 days, whereas at present the sample has to be sent out and that process takes one and a half to two months”.

The Delta Plus variant was confirmed in 20 more people in the state on Wednesday. With this, the total number of infected with Delta Plus has reached 65. Out of the above patients, only one woman has died. All other patients have been cured.

According to information received from the Health Department, out of all
the samples sent for genomic sequencing in the state so far, delta variants have been confirmed in more than 80 percent of the samples. While 65 people have been infected with Delta Plus

The new seven patients who have been confirmed with Delta Plus are all female. Four women out of the seven had taken both the dose and 1 had taken only the first dose. Except for the deceased woman, the rest of the women are between the ages of 17 to 38 and all have been cured.

Delta Plus has been confirmed in 11 people out of the samples sent from Mumbai. The maximum number of cases are 13 in Jalgaon, 12 in Ratnagiri, 6 in Thane, 6 in Pune, 3 in Palghar, 2 each in Nanded, Gondia and Raigad districts, whereas in in Chandrapur, Akola, Sindhudurg, Sangli, Nandurbar, Aurangabad, Kolhapur and Beed in all these districts only 1 patient each has been found.

Delta Plus has been confirmed in 65 samples, out of which 32 are male and 33 are female. 33 Delta Plus patients are in the age group of 19 to 45 years. There are 17 patients in the age group of 46 to 60 years. There are 7 people below 18 years and 8 people over 60 years. The above figures show that people of all ages are getting infected with the Delta Plus variant.
