Mumbai: Mumbai will observe a public holiday on Monday, September 8, as schools, colleges, government offices, markets, and banks across the city remain closed for Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi. The Maharashtra government deferred the holiday, originally set for September 5, to avoid a clash with Ganesh Chaturthi processions.

Milad-un-Nabi, also called Eid-e-Milad or Mawlid al-Nabi al-Sharif, was celebrated across most of the country on September 5. However, a state government circular clarified that while the September 5 holiday remained unchanged for other districts, in Mumbai and its suburbs, the observance was officially shifted to September 8.

The General Administration Department (GAD) stated in its notification: “While the holiday on September 5 will remain unchanged for other districts in the state, it has been shifted to September 8 in Mumbai city and suburbs.”

The change was made after the Muslim community in Mumbai scheduled the Milad-un-Nabi procession for September 8. Authorities said the decision was taken to ensure smooth celebrations and maintain communal harmony in the city.
