Mumbai on Alert: IMD Warns of 4.28m High Tide Amid Heavy Rains, Urges Public to Stay Away from Beaches

Mumbai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a high tide alert for Mumbai following persistent heavy rainfall across the region. According to the IMD forecast, a significant high tide is expected at around 3:48 pm on Monday, with sea waves predicted to rise as high as 4.28 meters.

In view of the risk, authorities have strongly advised residents and tourists to steer clear of Juhu Beach and other coastal stretches during high tide hours to prevent any untoward incidents. “People should strictly avoid visiting Juhu Beach around the high tide period to ensure their safety,” an IMD official cautioned.

This advisory follows an intense and early onset of the monsoon this year, which arrived on May 26 in the southern parts of India — the earliest in 75 years. Since then, Mumbai, particularly Colaba and its surrounding areas, has been experiencing continuous rainfall, swelling water levels in the city’s lakes to 36%, the highest seen in the past three years.

Meanwhile, other regions including Konkan and western Maharashtra have witnessed widespread downpours, while Vidarbha and Marathwada suffered torrential rain on Thursday night, resulting in floods and communication breakdowns.

The IMD has further warned of rough sea conditions that are likely to persist until July 1, with waves potentially exceeding 4.5 meters. Residents have been urged to remain away from the shorelines to avoid accidents.

Looking ahead, a yellow alert has been issued for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar districts for Wednesday, July 2, forecasting heavy rainfall with strong winds at isolated locations. Raigad district faces an even higher orange alert on the same day, anticipating heavy to very heavy showers in some areas. The IMD has also flagged the likelihood of significant rainfall between June 30 and July 3 across these districts.

Additionally, a separate advisory from the IMD at 7 am on Monday has highlighted the possibility of light to moderate rainfall over the next three to four hours in several districts including Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Mumbai, Nashik, Nandurbar, Nanded, Beed, Jalna, Dhule, Parbhani, Hingoli, Dharashiv, and Pune.
