Mumbai: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) is set to witness a massive infrastructure transformation, with several key projects announced in the Maharashtra Budget 2025-26, presented by Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar in the state legislature.

From elevated roads and sea links to metro expansions and the Navi Mumbai International Airport, the budget focuses on enhancing connectivity, reducing travel time, and improving public transport facilities across Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, and beyond. *

Key Road & Sea Link Projects* 1. Thane to Navi Mumbai International Airport Elevated Road : A new elevated corridor will seamlessly connect Thane, Dombivli, and Kalyan to the Navi Mumbai International Airport, ensuring faster access for commuters.

  1. Thane Coastal Road : A 13.45 km coastal road from Balkum to Gaimukh is being developed at ₹3,364 crore. Expected completion by 2028.
  2. Sewri-Worli Elevated Connector Road : A ₹1,051 crore elevated road connecting Sewri and Worli to decongest Mumbai’s road network. Completion expected by March 2026.
  3. Swatantryaveer Savarkar Versova-Bandra Sea Link : The 14 km sea link from Bandra to Versova will be built at an estimated ₹18,120 crore. Expected completion: May 2028.
  4. Uttan to Virar Sea Bridge : A 55-km-long sea bridge and connecting roads project, costing ₹87,427 crore, will enhance connectivity between Uttan and Virar. Metro Expansion: Fast-Tracking Public Transport : 143.57 km of metro routes have been developed across Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur, benefiting 10 lakh daily passengers. 64.4 km of new metro lines will be inaugurated in the next financial year: 41.2 km in Mumbai. 23.2 km in Pune. 237.5 km of metro lines to be operational in the next five years.

Nagpur Metro: First 40 km completed; 43.8 km second phase underway at ₹6,708 crore. Thane Circular Metro and Swargate-Katraj extension (Pune) approved by the Central Government. A ₹9,897 crore proposal for two new metro corridors in Pune (Khadakwasla-Swargate-Hadapsar-Kharadi and Nal Stop-Warje-Manikbagh) sent to the Centre.

Mumbai Airport to Navi Mumbai Airport Metro Line set to commence soon. Navi Mumbai Metro routes: Pendhar-Taloja-Khandeshwar to Navi Mumbai Airport project starting soon. Belapur metro station to Sagar Sangam corridor also in progress. Navi Mumbai International Airport is Nears Completion. The ₹1,160-hectare Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is nearing completion. 90 million passenger capacity and 2.6 million tons of cargo handling potential. 85% of construction completed; successful test flights conducted. Domestic flights to begin by April 2025.

Presenting the budget, Ajit Pawar highlighted the state’s commitment to making MMR one of the most well-connected regions in the country. With massive investments in metro rail, expressways, and air connectivity, Maharashtra is set to reduce congestion, improve urban mobility, and boost economic growth.

The elevated corridors, metro expansions, and sea links are expected to significantly cut travel time and enhance connectivity across the Mumbai region, making it future-ready for increasing urban demands.
