Mumbai: Heavy overnight rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms brought the city to a standstill in several areas as Mumbai woke up drenched on June 16. The downpour, which began around midnight on June 15, followed intense cloud buildup from the previous evening.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast “heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy showers at isolated pockets” across South Konkan-Goa, including Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed Mumbai and Thane under a Yellow Alert, while Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg are under an Orange Alert, warning of potentially hazardous rain conditions. Civic authorities have urged citizens to remain alert, especially those in low-lying areas prone to flooding.

Several neighborhoods, including Sion, Dadar, Parel, Bandra, Vile Parle, and Andheri, reported severe waterlogging, disrupting traffic flow and creating early morning chaos. Local train services—the city’s lifeline—were delayed by 5 to 10 minutes across Western, Central, and Harbour lines, although no cancellations were reported.
An advisory from the Mumbai Secretariat warned, “Moderate to heavy rain is expected in certain areas of Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburbs, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg in the next 3 hours.” Commuters have been advised to check travel routes in advance and avoid flood-prone zones.
