Mumbai: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, on Monday assured that the long-pending Mumbai-Goa highway project will be completed by June this year, bringing major relief to commuters and travellers in the Konkan region. The announcement comes after years of delay and repeated complaints about the road’s deteriorating condition and frequent traffic disruptions.

“There were numerous difficulties with the Mumbai-Goa highway. But do not worry, we will complete the road 100 per cent by this June,” Gadkari said, as quoted in reports. The highway, once completed, is expected to drastically reduce travel time and enhance connectivity between Mumbai and the southern coastal areas.

Addressing the Vasant Vyakhyanmala event hosted by Amar Hind Mandal in Dadar, the Union Minister also made a significant announcement regarding toll systems across India. He revealed that the Centre is set to introduce a new toll policy within the next 15 days aimed at removing physical toll booths from highways across the country.

The new system will employ cutting-edge technologies such as satellite-based vehicle tracking and automatic number plate recognition, enabling automatic deduction of toll charges directly from vehicle owners’ bank accounts. This move is expected to reduce congestion at toll plazas and address persistent complaints about delays and inefficiencies in the current system.
