Mumbai Faces Fresh Monsoon Surge as Thunderstorms, Gusty Winds and Heavy Showers Sweep City

Mumbai: Mumbai and large parts of Maharashtra witnessed a renewed burst of monsoon intensity on Tuesday morning, with grey skies unleashing steady to heavy downpours across the region. According to early updates from local weather stations, several areas in Mumbai recorded significant rainfall in a span of just a few hours, triggering weather alerts and advisories.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar districts, warning of moderate to heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and winds reaching up to 50 km/h. While the rainfall has not yet brought the city to a standstill, civic agencies are on high alert and drainage teams have been deployed in low-lying zones.

“Strong wind activity and lightning strikes are likely to affect isolated areas. We urge people to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary,” an IMD official told local media. The BMC has reinforced its control rooms and placed disaster response teams on standby.

Despite the downpour, Mumbai’s suburban trains remained mostly on schedule, and arterial roads were open as of Tuesday morning. However, intermittent traffic slowdowns were observed in parts of Andheri, Kurla, and Bhandup, largely due to minor waterlogging and reduced visibility.

In Thane and Navi Mumbai, brief power cuts and tree fall incidents were reported, though no injuries or major damage occurred. Palghar, a coastal district north of Mumbai, recorded early-morning thunderstorms with wind gusts nearing 40 km/h. Residents in fishing villages have been asked to stay away from shorelines and avoid venturing into the sea.

Authorities have reminded citizens to secure loose items from balconies, avoid sheltering under trees during lightning spells, and check for updates from official sources before commuting. Schools remain open, but parents were advised to monitor weather developments closely.

The IMD forecasts that these wet and windy conditions may persist for the next 24 to 48 hours, with rainfall likely to intensify over the Konkan belt and ghat regions later this week.
