Mumbai Sees 23% Jump in EV Registrations, Outpaces Maharashtra in Shift to Electric Mobility

Mumbai is witnessing a rapid transition towards electric mobility, with electric vehicle (EV) registrations in the city rising by 23 per cent in the financial year 2025-26, significantly ahead of Maharashtra’s overall 14 per cent growth, according to recent transport department figures.

Mumbai records strong EV growth

The rise in registrations highlights the growing acceptance of electric vehicles among Mumbai commuters, driven by rising fuel costs, improved charging infrastructure and increasing awareness of sustainable transport.

Data from major Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) across Mumbai shows that EV adoption is increasing steadily in all parts of the city. The Tardeo RTO recorded the highest jump, with registrations rising from 5,259 in 2024-25 to 6,597 in 2025-26.

The Andheri and Wadala RTOs also posted strong growth, each crossing 5,900 EV registrations during the current financial year, while the Borivali RTO contributed to the overall rise with consistent gains.

Overall, Mumbai’s EV registrations increased from 18,844 units last year to 23,186 units this year, underlining the city’s accelerating shift toward cleaner and more affordable transport options.

Maharashtra remains among India’s top EV markets

At the state level, Maharashtra has strengthened its position as one of the country’s leading electric vehicle markets. Total EV registrations across the state rose to 2,95,341 in 2025-26, compared to 2,59,000 in the previous year.

Electric two-wheelers continue to dominate the market, accounting for 76 per cent of total EV registrations, with 2,25,227 units added this year. However, this share has dropped from 82 per cent last year, suggesting that electric cars and commercial vehicles are also beginning to see increased demand.

Policy support driving adoption

Industry experts say the surge in EV adoption has been supported by improved regulations and better charging infrastructure across the state.

Simplified procedures for setting up charging stations in residential buildings have made it easier for housing societies to adopt EV-friendly infrastructure, helping remove one of the biggest barriers for potential buyers.

With the total number of electric vehicles in Maharashtra now crossing 10.2 lakh, up sharply from just 31,000 in 2019, the state is moving rapidly towards building a cleaner and more sustainable transport ecosystem.
