Mumbai Drowns Under Relentless Downpour: Roads Turn into Rivers, Commuters Struggle Through Knee-Deep Water

Mumbai: The city woke up to yet another rain-drenched morning on Tuesday, as heavy downpours continued for the third consecutive day, leaving large parts of Mumbai waterlogged and daily life severely disrupted. Commuters struggled to navigate knee-deep waters, while many abandoned their vehicles on flooded streets.

Visuals from Kurla showed a BEST bus partially submerged near the railway station, with two-wheeler riders pushing their scooters through waist-high water. Similar scenes unfolded in Dadar’s Hindmata area, a chronic flood-prone spot, and Matunga, where roads were heavily inundated and impassable for smaller vehicles.

In Andheri West, Veera Desai Road turned into a flowing water channel, leaving cars and auto-rickshaws stranded. Further north in Nalasopara, residents waded through murky, knee-deep waters as relentless rain continued to batter the suburb. Across the city, commuters were seen braving floods, balancing umbrellas, rolling up trousers, and helping push stranded vehicles.

Traffic police reported severe snarls on several arterial routes due to submerged roads. Public transport struggled to cope, with office-goers and schoolchildren facing long waits at bus stops. Train services on the Central and Harbour lines were delayed in several pockets as rainwater seeped onto tracks.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar visited the disaster control room at Mantralaya to review the situation. Officials briefed him on rainfall data, flood-prone areas, and ongoing rescue and relief operations across Mumbai and other affected regions of the state.

Amid worsening conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a nowcast warning at 10:15 am, predicting intense spells of rain with gusty winds of 40–50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, and the ghats of Pune over the next three to four hours. Authorities warned that waterlogging could worsen if the showers continued unabated.
