Mumbai BEST Strike Brings City Transport to a Halt, Thousands of Commuters Left Stranded

Mumbai Faces Travel Chaos as BEST Employees Begin Indefinite Strike

Mumbai’s public transport network suffered a major setback on Friday after employees of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking launched an indefinite strike, disrupting bus services across the city and affecting lakhs of daily commuters.

The industrial action began after discussions between employee unions and the administration failed to reach a consensus on several long-pending demands. As buses remained off the roads, commuters were forced to seek alternative transport options during peak office hours.

Bus Operations Severely Affected

The strike resulted in a drastic reduction in bus services, leaving many routes without regular operations. Long queues were seen at bus stops across the city as passengers waited for limited transport options.

The disruption impacted office-goers, students and daily wage earners who depend heavily on BEST services for their daily commute.

Metro and Rail Networks Come Under Pressure

With bus services largely unavailable, thousands of commuters turned to metro and suburban rail services. Several stations witnessed unusually heavy crowds, leading to long waiting lines and packed trains during the morning rush.

Transport hubs across Mumbai reported increased passenger movement as people scrambled to reach workplaces and educational institutions on time.

Protest Raises Concerns on Public Transport Day

The strike coincided with a major public transport-related event in Mumbai, creating additional challenges for authorities. The timing of the protest amplified commuter difficulties and highlighted the ongoing issues surrounding the city’s public transport infrastructure.

Employees Push for Major Reforms

Union representatives are demanding a series of measures aimed at improving employee welfare and strengthening BEST operations. Their demands include regularisation of contractual drivers, better salaries and benefits, expansion of the BEST-owned fleet, and settlement of pending dues for retired employees.

Workers have also sought implementation of revised pay structures and long-awaited financial benefits.

Key Commercial Areas Witness Disruption

Several important business districts and densely populated neighbourhoods experienced significant travel delays due to the strike. Areas across South Mumbai, Bandra-Kurla Complex and parts of the eastern and central suburbs reported increased commuter congestion.

Private transport services and ride-hailing platforms also witnessed a surge in demand as stranded passengers searched for alternatives.
