Mumbai: Mumbai and surrounding areas woke up to a wet Saturday morning as heavy rains and thunderstorms swept across the city and adjoining districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places. Palghar district has been placed under a yellow alert.

According to the forecast, skies over Mumbai and its suburbs will remain cloudy, with continuous heavy showers and the possibility of very heavy rainfall in some areas. Temperatures are expected to hover around 29°C maximum and 24°C minimum, slightly below normal for this time of the year.

Intense downpours have already been reported in Thane and Navi Mumbai, including Nerul, Vashi, Belapur, Kalyan, and Dombivli. The IMD has cautioned residents about waterlogging in low-lying areas and possible traffic disruptions, advising people to avoid unnecessary travel.

In Palghar, intermittent heavy showers are expected to continue throughout the day, with officials warning about rising river levels and waterlogging in farmlands, which may affect crops. Daytime temperatures in the district are predicted between 25°C and 28°C.

The Konkan belt, including Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg, remains under an orange alert. Heavy rains have lashed the ghats in Raigad, increasing the risk of landslides, while torrential downpours and strong winds have been reported in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. The sea remains rough, and fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into waters.

The IMD has also forecast widespread rainfall activity across Konkan, Marathwada, and the ghat regions of Central Maharashtra between September 27 and 29, with isolated pockets expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall.

For September 28, a red alert has been issued for Raigad district and the ghats of Pune, while Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Ratnagiri, Nashik, Satara, and Kolhapur will remain under orange alert. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and stay updated on weather advisories.
