In a significant legal development, a Mohali court on Tuesday sentenced self-styled Punjab pastor Bajinder Singh to life imprisonment in connection with the 2018 Zirakpur rape case. The court had convicted Singh last week under several provisions of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 376 (rape), Section 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), and Section 506 (criminal intimidation).

While Bajinder Singh faced life imprisonment, five other accused individuals in the case—pastor Jatinder, pastor Akbar, Sattar Ali, and Sandeep Pehalwan—were acquitted, leaving the court’s decision to focus solely on Singh’s culpability.

Following the court’s ruling, the victim, who had bravely pursued justice, expressed her fears for future safety, stating, “He (Bajinder) is a psycho and will do the same offense after coming out of jail, so I want him to stay in the prison. A lot of girls (victims) have won today. I request that DGP ensure our security since there is a possibility of attacks on us.”

The victim, who had previously called for at least 20 years of imprisonment for the accused, continues to advocate for stronger measures to protect herself and other potential victims.
